So I held out. For an entire year even. I’ve been around for enough Apple product releases to know that I prefer to not purchase version one of anything. Well obviously Apple released the iPhone 3G last month. I even covered the Dallas release on Leo Laporte’s live web coverage. I’ve tried countless times to purchase one. Who knew the lines would still be in front of the Apple Store an entire month after the release! Well 6 million phones sold should tell you something.
Honestly I’m blown away by the iPhone and it was well worth the wait. I can certainly see the serious change in the way people use devices with this thing. Its dead simple and the apps quite frankly make this worth while. As mentioned several times on MacBreak Weekly – we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg as far as application potential. Most of these apps were in development with no iPhone to test them on – only the simulator in the SDK.
I’ve discussed my purchase with some friends who still felt the AT&T plans were priced a bit high. I would have to disagree. Not that I’m pulling for AT&T, but once you get into a groove using the iPhone and you realize what you’re getting out of it (and I’ll be honest, the phone is the least exciting feature on here) – I think its a hell of a bargain. I don’t have a ton of experience with smart phones, but it seems that what the iPhone allows you to do would seem to be worth even more than the plans they offer.
Another interesting way of looking at the expense – I’m not one to talk much on the phone. I have a few people I talk to on a regular basis, but honestly I’d rather talk to people in person than sit there with a device stuck in my ear. I don’t have to use the phone much for work, so it makes sense for me to buy fewer minutes and get unlimited texting. I’ll text people so I can get right to the point and get on with my day. For me this makes sense.
All phone plans include unlimited data – this is a deal for us as users. Most of the functionality that makes the iPhone extremely useful involves a data connection.
I’ve had my phone for only 2 days now so I’m hesitant to start spinning off a review right away other than that 1) I’m impressed and 2) the last product that I remember thinking was this revolutionary was the Sony Walkman back in the 80′s… I hope that says something.
